IoF2020 paves the way towards data-driven farming that is capable of providing higher production yields in a more sustainable and environmentally-responsible fashion, while also making the European farming sector more competitive in an increasingly globalized world. To achieve this objective, the project is organized in five trials that cover arable, dairy, fruit, vegetables and meat farming, and involve more than 25 use cases all across Europe.
I was involved in (and leading for the first year) a use case aimed to enhance transparency and traceability of meat throughout the production chain. We explored the interoperability of information systems at the farm, during transport, at the slaughterhouse and at the point of sale using an EPCIS infrastructure. This use-case encompassed the whole pork meat production chain, from the farm to the consumer’s plate, with the aim to increase transparency and traceability.
